TWIN CITIES

Cork and Shanghai are twin cities, with a sister city agreement formalized in 2005. Cork was the first Irish city to twin with a Chinese city. This twinning relationship, along with partnerships with  HangzhouWuxi, and  Shenzhen, aims to foster cultural, educational, and economic exchange between the two cities.

Cork’s twinning with Shanghai, and its other Chinese partnerships, are part of a broader effort to internationalize the city and promote global connections. The relationship includes:

  • Cultural and educational exchange:
  • Cork City Council supports student and teacher exchanges between schools in Cork and China, promoting cross-cultural understanding.
  • Economic development:
  • Cork City Council also supports local businesses in exploring and developing markets in China.
  • Joint projects:
  • The city council has signed  Memoranda of Understanding with various Shanghai government bodies to facilitate cooperation on specific projects.
  • Celebrations and events:
  • Cork celebrates Chinese New Year with events that showcase Chinese culture and art.
  • High-level visits:
  • There have been numerous visits between representatives of both cities, including Lord Mayors and other officials, to strengthen ties and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

This twinning arrangement is a significant aspect of Cork’s international relations and contributes to its reputation as a globally connected and culturally diverse city.

The broad themes are :
